Cosmetic Surgery

Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Otoplasty, or ear reshaping surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to correct ears that are overly prominent, asymmetric, or disproportionate in size. Protruding ears can be a source of significant self-consciousness for both children and adults. At Amit Aesthetics in Aligarh, Dr. Amit Agrawal performs otoplasty with precision and artistry to create naturally positioned ears that sit closer to the head and blend harmoniously with the overall facial profile.

The surgical technique involves making a small incision behind the ear to expose the underlying cartilage. The cartilage is then carefully reshaped, scored, or sutured into a new position using permanent internal stitches that maintain the correction long-term. Because the incision is placed in the natural crease behind the ear, the resulting scar is virtually invisible. The procedure can address a range of concerns including protruding ears, ear asymmetry, overly large earlobes, and congenital irregularities.

Otoplasty is one of the few cosmetic procedures safely performed on children — typically from age 5 or 6 once the ear cartilage is sufficiently developed. For adults, the procedure is equally effective and can be life-changing, eliminating years of self-consciousness. The surgery is performed on an outpatient basis and most patients experience minimal discomfort during recovery.

Recovery & Aftercare

A head dressing is applied after surgery and worn for 3–6 days to protect the ears during initial healing. After the dressing is removed, patients are advised to wear a soft headband over the ears at night for 4–6 weeks to prevent accidental displacement during sleep. Absorbable stitches are used in most cases, eliminating the need for suture removal. Mild swelling and tenderness are normal and resolve within 1–2 weeks. Most adults return to work within 5–7 days, and children can return to school within a week. Contact sports should be avoided for at least 6 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can otoplasty be performed?
Otoplasty can be safely performed on children from the age of 5–6, once the ear cartilage has reached sufficient maturity (approximately 90% of adult size). There is no upper age limit for the procedure — adults of all ages can benefit from ear reshaping surgery.
Is the procedure painful?
Otoplasty is performed under local anesthesia with sedation for adults, or under general anesthesia for young children. During the procedure, you will feel no pain. Post-operatively, mild discomfort and a feeling of tightness around the ears is common for the first few days and is easily managed with prescribed pain medication.
Are the results of otoplasty permanent?
Yes, the results of otoplasty are permanent. The cartilage is physically reshaped and secured with internal sutures that maintain the new position indefinitely. Once the ears have healed in their corrected position, they will remain there for life.
