Under-Eye Dark Circle Treatment

Under-eye dark circles are one of the most common aesthetic complaints, making people look tired, stressed, and older than they feel. The causes are surprisingly numerous and complex — at Amit Aesthetics in Aligarh, we have identified 19 distinct contributing factors organized into three categories. Facial ageing causes include volume loss in the under-eye area (tear trough hollowing), thinning of the delicate under-eye skin revealing underlying blood vessels, fat pad descent creating shadows, loss of bony support, and pigmentation changes. Lifestyle factors encompass chronic sleep deprivation, excessive screen time and eye strain, dehydration, smoking, chronic stress, allergies and nasal congestion, and poor dietary habits. Other contributing factors include genetic predisposition, sun damage, hormonal changes, certain medications, iron deficiency anemia, thyroid disorders, and chronic sinus conditions.

Because dark circles have so many potential causes, effective treatment requires accurate diagnosis of the underlying factors at play in your specific case. Our comprehensive approach begins with a detailed assessment of your under-eye area, medical history, and lifestyle factors. Based on this evaluation, we create a personalized treatment plan that may combine multiple modalities for optimal results.

Our treatment arsenal includes specialized under-eye creams with retinol, vitamin K, caffeine, and peptides for mild cases; intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy to reduce vascular and pigmentary discoloration; fractional laser resurfacing to improve skin thickness and texture; hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to restore lost volume in the tear trough; autologous fat injections for deeper volume replacement; lower blepharoplasty surgery to address excess skin and fat pads; and mid-face cheek lift to address volume loss that contributes to under-eye hollowing. Dr. Agrawal's dual expertise as both a cosmetic surgeon and aesthetic specialist allows us to offer the full spectrum of treatments, from gentle topical approaches to advanced surgical correction.

Fat injections require similar recovery time to fillers but with slightly more swelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes under-eye dark circles?
Dark circles have many potential causes, and most people have multiple contributing factors. The most common include genetic predisposition to thin under-eye skin, loss of volume (fat and bone) with ageing, pigmentation from sun damage or ethnicity, visible blood vessels through thin skin, allergies causing nasal congestion and blood pooling, and lifestyle factors like poor sleep, dehydration, and screen fatigue. An accurate diagnosis is essential for effective treatment.
Are under-eye fillers safe?
Hyaluronic acid fillers are very safe for the under-eye area when administered by an experienced practitioner. Dr. Agrawal uses specialized tear trough filler techniques with cannulas (blunt-tipped needles) to minimize bruising and ensure precise, safe placement. Results are immediate and last 9-12 months. The procedure is reversible — hyaluronic acid can be dissolved if needed, providing an additional safety net.
Can dark circles be permanently treated?
The answer depends on the cause. Volume loss treated with fat injections or blepharoplasty can provide long-lasting or permanent improvement. Pigmentation-related dark circles may require ongoing maintenance treatments. Lifestyle-related dark circles improve significantly with habit changes and can be maintained with good sleep, hydration, and skincare. A combination approach addressing all contributing factors provides the most comprehensive, lasting results.
Which treatment is best for my type of dark circles?
Hollow or sunken under-eyes respond best to volume replacement with fillers or fat. Pigmented (brown) dark circles improve with IPL, peels, and depigmenting agents. Vascular (blue-purple) dark circles benefit from IPL and laser treatments. Crepe-like, thin skin responds to laser resurfacing and retinol therapy. Many patients have a combination of types, and Dr. Agrawal will create a multi-modal plan tailored to your specific pattern.
